Lalla Essaydi is a female artist from Morocco, who is known for her staged photographs of Arabic women. Through her art, she is able to explore the position of women in the Arabic world. Her artwork consists of photography mixed with the art of henna and Arabic calligraphy, which was often seen as a male practice. Lalla had studied Orientalist painters who have portrayed Arabic women as sexual objects. In Les Femmes du Maroc she mimics the poses of these paintings (the reclining nude remind us of Ingres or Gérôme) and transforms the harem into a feminist statement. She reflects on the images of women from past and present, from the East and the West.
