Vanessa Beecroft was born April 25th, 1969, in Genoa, Italy. Her teachings in Italy taught her the ability to manipulate the artistic expression. She did not fit in too well with her other artistic peers. Vanessa Beecroft artwork mainly focuses on modern performance art but she does dabble with paintings and photography. She likes her work to be very large-scale. Beecroft also makes sure that recordings and pictures are always being taken during her live performances so that it can become its own form of art and be appreciated separately.
Beecroft typically uses nude or semi-clothed female models to portray her images or artwork. Throughout her life, Beecroft has struggled with eating disorders and her struggles are reflected in her work. Her artwork incorporates ideologies of femininity, body image, and the female experience. Beecroft’s work gives off a feeling of female empowerment. Her work can also be very controversial and uncomfortable, because her models are living women and nude. Beecroft focuses on the relationship and reaction her viewers experience. Beecroft’s work can be timely because she must first choose the spacing and placement of her models. She must also decide on the ethnicity and body type of her models. Her live performances are very unique from what you would see in a typical gallery.
