A painter, social activist, mixed media sculptor and performance artist; Faith Ringgold was born on October 8, 1930 and best known for her colorful artwork, that typically depicted themes of slave culture of the south pre - civil war era. Within her art she confronts prejudice, addresses political statements, and integrates racial slurs to magnify the ethnic tension, and race riots of the 1960s. Nonetheless, her audience is the Black community; in which she helps guide, educate, and advocate for.
Above is a "Woman looking in a Mirror," that illustrate Black power/ beauty. For the most part Black women are rarely acknowledged nor seen as beautiful, and usually lack self-esteem. However the image sculpted by Ringgold disrupts that ideology that Black women aren't beautiful. Instead the woman is proudly admiring her features as a Black woman! with no shame and is embodying her own self- regard over those of white America.
